If anyone knows wedding paper trends, it's Shannon at Southall Eden Paperie. I always look forward to seeing her booth at bridal shows because she always debuts something truly unique in wedding paper. I asked her to share the hot new wedding invitation trends for 2010. If you can conceive it, Shannon can create it. If you aren't creative, Shannon can dream up something super perfect - just contact Shannon to discuss your ideas. Guest Post: Shannon of Southall Eden Paperie, a Nashville-based custom invitation company With 2009 already half over and the height of wedding season upon us, new and exciting trends for the coming year are already emerging in the world of wedding stationery. Whether you are a bride shopping for the perfect invitation or a wedding industry professional who likes to keep abreast of what's hot, you can expect to see the following trends in the coming months and year. 1. Unexpected New Wedding non-Color: Clear! That's right, clear. As in, complete void of any color whatsoever. Seem strange to you? If you think about it, it's really not. Crystal, glass, and diamonds are synonymous with weddings, so why not carry the notion over you stationery as well? This is a trend that has been utilized by progressive designers in L.A. and New York in the recent past, but with Nashville's artsy population always ready to embrace the unique, we are sure to see more of it right here in our own city in the coming year. Although it goes with any accent color you can think of, it is especially powerful with black and jewel tones such as red, hot pink, electric blue, and royal purple as pictured here.
2. Vintage and ethnic inspired prints This trend is one of my favorites because the sky is literally the limit, and a beautiful print on an invitation can be carried throughout the wedding from the cake to the decor to the linens. With the popularity of letterpress printing, which dates back to the 1400's, it naturally comes to follow that traditional letterpress patterns of the past would become popular as well. That movement opened up the doors for the resurgence of patterns of all eras, especially the 50's and 60's. Vintage patterns add a traditional touch to invitations, while unexpected new color schemes keep them fresh. Much like vintage prints, ethnic prints can also tie a wedding look together from start to finish. As economic times encourage couples to start leaning towards smaller more intimate weddings, the use of ethnic patterns is a great way to personalize their big day. Whether it reflects the heritage of the bride and/ or groom, or just honors a favorite travel destination, it is a classy and subtle way to pay homage to another culture that is significant to the couple.
3. Unique Die-cuts While you may not be familiar with the term die-cut, you have undoubtedly seen the results before. It is the process of cutting a sheet of paper into a particular non-standard shape, meaning pretty much anything that is not a rectangle or square. The ever-popular invitation "pockets" are die-cut from extra large sheets of paper (which is what makes them pricey). Rounded corners are another example of die cutting that you have surely seen. But we are starting to see more intricate and elaborate die-cuts in the form of non-traditional shaped pockets, sophisticated corners on layered invitations, and even cuts used to create self-embellishing shapes.
4. Font-tabulous designs As brides get more creative with their weddings, invitations printed with a single formal script are becoming less common. In recent years a popular concept has been to print the wedding information in a conservative font and highlight the names of the bride and groom in a more elegant or artistic script. While this trend is still very in style, we will also see it taken one step further with the use of multiple fonts becoming the design itself. Bold, elaborate letters reminiscent of vintage posters and distressed fonts will be among the favorites. During a time when everyone is looking for ways to cut back on the budget, this fad allows the budget bride to make a bold statement without the cost of specialty papers and pricey embellishments. Who wouldn't love that?

Thursday, May 20, 2009 I met Rachel on Twitter. She's based in Nashville and does custom wedding invitations. She now offers brides 10% when you mention ABG when you first contact her. (Thanks Rachel!) Here's how Rachel describes her approach to wedding invitation design: "Have a very specific idea in mind but need someone to bring your vision alive? Don't have a clue what you want or where to start? Why spend hours searching through endless cookie-cutter invitations for a wedding invitation mold that only mostly fits your style? I will create a fresh, original invitation design that matches both your personality and budget. A couple's wedding invitation is a place to express what makes them one-of-a-kind. Don't miss out on the opportunity to make a great first impression!" Rachel can be reached via her blog at Rachel Jasper Design or her etsy store. Or you can contact Rachel directly at 615-473-8774.
