Just like designer dresses, wedding cakes change every year. New flavors, colors and textures appear each season and right now there’s a new crop of wedding cake trends that will make your cake almost too pretty to eat…almost:).

So what’s in store for 2011? Lorie Burcham, of Nashville’s amazing Crumb de la Crumb cake shop, has given us the latest details for what makes a fabulous cake in 2011 and trust us; these cakes just might give your dress a run for its money!

Old is New

Vintage is all over the design world right now and it’s been beautifully translated into countless weddings. Shabby Chic loving brides are incorporating vintage décor into their wedding cake designs through specific patterns (like Lorie’s Damask cake below), colors and objects (vintage cake toppers, etc).

Bringing the Outdoors In

Natural elements continue to be apart of popular cake designs this year and it’s a trend that looks amazing no matter what season you’re getting married in. Earthy textures, fresh flowers and the use of branching easily move from spring to summer, fall and winter with a few changes to color and style.

Brides are loving tall cakes, and this year designers are more than up for the challenge! Tiers with varying heights are gaining in popularity as brides and grooms are on the lookout for cakes that are unique and visually interesting.

This year, details and embellishments are taking cakes to another level of gorgeous! More brides and grooms are shying away from simplistic designs and opting for cakes with elaborate styles that give cakes that extra ‘wow’ factor.
