Brides Beware: Be Smart, Don’t Hire a Bad Nashville Wedding Company

Monday, October 4, 2010

Did you know there NASHVILLE WEDDING VENDORS with F RATINGS with the Better Business Bureau

No pretty pics in todays post - but hopefully my simple message will save you stress and money.  I hear nightmare wedding stories about unprofessional wedding vendors ALL the time.  Many are well known companies that you see everywhere and have great pictures/designs.  But everything isnt as it seems.

As you plan your wedding, it is important that you hire the very best vendors that your money can buy - from a professionalism, creativity and value standpoint.  Many consumers, including myself, have hired unscrupulous businesses and it's never any fun to lose your money or be treated unkindly.  When I got married, there were no websites like ABG or WeddingWire to help with reviews or local guidance.  I hired a wedding videographer who didn't deliver as promised and wouldn't take responsibility for his mistakes.  He was rude and I did the best I could to resolve the matter but made sure I let the Better Business Buereau know so that other brides could be on alert.

I recently had another run in with a HORRIBLE carpet cleaning company and am taking steps to 1) recover my costs and 2) submit reviews so that others can be warned.  However, what good is submiiting reviews if no one researches a company before they hire?  That was my mistake - I was moving too fast, needed their services asap and didnt take time to call around to find a better company.  The carpet mishire wasnt nearly as emotional as the wedding videographer because wedding planning is a lot more emotional in general and anything goes wrong leaves a lasting bad taste.

Don't hire bad wedding vendors!

You can hire great wedding vendors.  Here are some quick tips that I recommend as you hire EACH wedding vendors.

1) Start by vending local wedding resources via ABG, your wedding planner, friends,, online, bridal shows, referrals, etc.

2) Before you make a call to them, check the BBB immediately!! Search for the business using advance search by wedding categories or search by business name.

3) If they are not listed on the BBB or have a A rating - great!  But, there are a few more steps because the BBB isnt the only resource to rely on.  (They've been accused of unethical practices.  In other words - you can trust a C on BBB as an indicator of issues before you can trust an A.  Some companies can pay for an A rating but a C does mean that there may be more to explore.)

4) Spend time googling them - see if brides/bloggers are talking about them positively/negatively.  Positive comments?  Proceed!

5) Schedule a meeting - get to know them - do you like them?  Do they seem honest?  Do you get a good vibe?  Are they a good marriage of what you want/need vs just being the cheapest?  Yes - Keep them on the list.

6) Then, check their website - are they on Twitter or Facebook?  Great!  Read their communications - go back a few weeks or months even.  Follow them.  Are they consistent with their personality or do they present one face to you and another (bashing their brides) on Twitter?

7) Are they connected, well liked by others in the Nashville wedding community?  If they aren't connected to other wedding vendors and no one is talking about them - that doesnt mean they aren't a great vendor BUT it could mean there is less accountabiity.  What's that mean?  If someone is well connected in the Nashville wedding community aka has friends and a reputation, they are less likely to mire their image/brand and will be more likely to work with you to resolve any issues.  Again, this isnt always the case but sometimes vendors with an established name on the line will work harder to keep that good name.

8) When in doubt, always know that you can contact ABG.  We have worked with some great wedding vendors and some not so great ones.  We won't tell you not to hire a vendor BUT we will strongly recommend others.  READ BETWEEN THE LINES!

Working with a bad vendor already?

If you are having problems with a vendor you've already hired, document your issues via email conversation/certified mail.  Work productively to resolve the manner.  No one is perfect; it's all about how the company works with you to resolve the issue.  That's what counts in the end.  Please be fair.  Make your concerns/issues known and give them time to satisfy you.

If you can not resolve the problem, contact your credit card company and initiate a dispute.  (Always pay with a credit card when you can for this reason.) Submit a complaint with the Better Business Bureau.  Then, post reviews on ABG, WeddingWire, facebook (if they have a page), etc.  ABG will pull any advertiser from our website with 3 negative written reviews from brides.

I hope these tips will save your sanity!  You don't need unnecessary stress as you plan your wedding but bad hiring happens to all of us.  Be proactive and you'll be fine!

Great advice! Something I think is a great indicator is your point in #5. How do you FEEL about them? We were lucky and figured this out early. I know some other who didn’t and it’s not a good scenario.

Seriously, a great post!

Good post, Ashley! Sorry about the carpet cleaning- I’d hate to think how a bad cleaning could turn out. (We used Stanley Steemer and they were fab fyi) There’s a lot of great information in this post, and hopefully the majority of brides are doing their research. I’ve run into a pretty good amount that aren’t, though. I think sometimes we were rose colored glasses and get caught up in the fun on planning, and forget to make well informed decisions based on fact and not just emotions. I had an awful experience with a vendor, and learned a lot of advice that I’d love to pass to other brides.

Great advice! #5 is something I recommend to *all* my clients for any vendor - including myself! If you do not get a “Great vibe” from the vendor then cost doesn’t matter, you will not be happy.

Good luck with the carpet cleaning that cannot be a fun situation.

Thanks for sharing with Nashville brides!

I completely agree!!!! I’m getting ready to appear in court regarding a case against my wedding photographer - LANE PHOTOGRAPHY - Like your videographer - he did NOT deliver what we asked for - in fact, he called me a week before the wedding and told me he broke his fingers and was going to have to send a replacement.  I found out recently that he didn’t break his fingers, but had in fact agreed to shoot another wedding that day!  And when I confronted him about it, he did not deny his transgression, but he did not apologize either - and he refused to refund my money.  After doing some more research, I found that he did it to another bride this summer too!  Once we’re past the court case, I plan to contact the BBB and post my review on as many wedding sites as I can!

I think this is great information but the BBB might rate you if you are a non-member. For example I am not a member three times the BBB said they would create a file for my company for free, and they have yet to do that but seeing one cake vendors rating for not paying them, I would rather be NOT rated than have a B- by my name (very reputable company in town has a B- not sure that is a fair rating) especially when all the planners in town are using this company for cakes for almost every wedding. One of my favorite cakes friends also has a B- and she does outstanding work! But a paid client gets a A+ she is also one of my favorite friends in cake world.

Also sites like Ashley’s Bride Guide, The Knot, Studio Wed, Weddings 101 recommend people that pay for that recommendation, A delightful day is also affiliated with studio wed and from what I understand they can only recommend the studio wed vendors. So this is not always the best place to start. Check out Wedding Wire there is no way to rig those ratings, and we do not pay them for the ratings. Our Brides have the right to say what they want with the rating as well, and we cannot remove a negative rating. Doing a random check of Ashely’s Bride Guide Vendors a large % are unrated by the BBB, or they do not know about them as a company. So when you are looking for the company’s I would check wedding wire.

Hi Shara -

Thanks for your opinion.  Unfortunately there is no sure fire way to assess vendors other than reading and trusting your gut, as I have recommended.  All of the sites that you mention are ad based websites.  They do not employ investigators, as does the BBB.  The BBB does offer services for it’s members but what it does well is keep a record of complaints, lets companies respond to those complaints and lets consumers know if the company responded.  Thats more than anyone else can do - from ABG, StudioWed or Wedding Wire.  We are not in the business of investigating complaints.
What ABG does do for it’s brides/advertisers is reach out to vendors when there is a complaint and pulls the vendor if there are more than 3.  Most sites I am sure WILL not do that - from WeddingWire to The Knot.

Brides cant solely rely on WeddingWire either.  It’s just the nature of the beast.  Companies falsely their own reports on WeddingWire.  And, WeddingWire gives out their “top 5% percent badge to tons of vendors, many of whom have poor ratings on BBB.  I just had a bride complain about one of those vendors - see above - Lane Photography - has a great standing with WeddingWire.
That doesnt mean this bride’s experience wasnt isolated BUT a WeddingWire rating doesnt guarantee anything.

Each bride has to use good judgment and know that the web is full of great and not so great info.  I can introduce a vendor - an advertiser or not - and that introduction is just that.  I cant guarantee anyones experience.  Each bride has to meet them and trust their gut.  We will always strive to do our best and try to remove vendors that do not serve clients the way we would.
