Expert Advice from Kerried Away Couture: Wear-Again Dress Styles for Your Bridesmaids
Friday, December 9, 2011
Yesterday, Ashley of iHospitality introduced us to eco-friendly wedding attire. I thought I'd continue the attire conversation by reaching out to Kerri of Kerried Away Couture to learn which bridesmaid styles are more likely to be loved and therefore worn again by your bridesmaids. Doesn't every bride say "You will love the dresses! In fact, you can wear them again." The truth is, that's rarely possible because many of the styles are too formal or the color is too distinct to be worn again (as were the kiwi green, ankle length dresses I selected for my maids - what was I thinking??).
If your goal is to find a dress that your bridesmaids will want to wear again, here's what you need to know based on my conversation with Kerri...

ABG: What are the most popular dress styles for bridesmaids right now?
Kerried Away: We are seeing a lot of interest in one shoulder dresses, as well as brides looking to add details that create a vintage feel such as handmade silk rosettes. Brides are also using two styles for their wedding instead of just one which is great when you have a range of body types. Bridal sashes that complement bridesmaid dresses are also becoming increasingly popular.
ABG: Which types of bridesmaid dresses are women most likely to wear again?
Kerried Away: One shoulder and sweetheart styles are easily worn again. Simple, clean styles without much detail are also easier to wear later. If brides want details on their dresses we encourage things like detachable bows and brooches which bridesmaids can remove after the wedding. In regards to color choices, bright colors are good on a lot of skin tones and could be paired with a neutral cardigan later to create a more casual look. Navy and black are also good choices as they are neutrals which look great on most.

Kerried Away Couture: Obviously a shorter dress can be worn easier after the wedding than a longer dress, however, Kerried Away offers an alterations package to all bridesmaids who purchase long dresses which they can use to shorten their dress after the wedding. Long dresses are great for more formal weddings as well as fall and winter weddings. A great way to decide whether you want long or short is to look at pictures of weddings with long dress and pictures of wedding with short dresses – compare these side by side. Ask yourself which look you like better in photos. For my own wedding, I preferred the pictures to look more uniform and therefore chose long dresses. Choosing long or short dresses is really a personal choice and should be based on the brides preference and wedding style.

ABG: You designed the stunning bridesmaid dresses for your wedding last summer, what did you do during the design process to ensure that your bridesmaids would truly be able to wear their dresses again?
Kerried Away Couture: First, I chose a neutral color (black) that looks great on everyone. I also added a detachable bow. I love bows but I knew the girls may not want to have a bow on their dress after the wedding so they were made detachable. Last I picked a style (one shoulder with full skirts) that looks good on almost any body type.
