Get to Know Lisa Shelby Photography: Creating Wedding Art That Tells Your Unique Story

Tuesday, February 16, 2016

Talk about turning lemons into lemonade.  Instead of stewing over the wedding photos they wish they'd gotten, Lisa and Chris Shelby turned their disappointment into art.  They created Lisa Shelby Photography, a Nashville-based wedding photography team that is determined to ensure that every couple gets the quality photos they desire.

Get to know this super sweet and talented photography duo through my Q&A today, and contact them if you're looking for a team to capture the story of your Nashville wedding.

Tell me about the service you're offering.
As wedding photographers with an eye for creative possibilities, we look for fun and dramatic wedding moments.  Even more than capturing a moment in time, we believe your wedding photographs should give glimpses into your personality and story – the adventure, the romance, the beauty, and the exquisite details.  We are able to enhance these images with custom materials that you may not find with other photographers, including fine papers, canvases, frames, metal prints, wood prints, and custom designed books with tons of options such as Italian leathers and Japanese silks or linens.  We create wedding art!

How many years have you been in business?
This is our fifth year in business...  We started our business officially in the beginning of 2012, but had been photographing as a hobby for several years prior.

How did you get started in weddings?
What began five years ago with a desire to provide newly married couples with quality wedding photos has grown into our Nashville area based business, Lisa Shelby Photography.  Here we capture wedding images we wish we had to remember our special day.  Like many engaged couples, we did not realize the significance of using just “any old” wedding photographer when we were married back in September 2000.  Even though we regret this decision, it was a defining moment that changed the direction of our future forever.

What do you like most about weddings?
Watching the emotion and love between not only the husband and wife, but their friends and families!  We love seeing the father of the bride that would never in a million years cry and get emotional, get emotional and tear up!  We love seeing the sparkle in the bride and groom's eyes just before they are announced as husband and wife!  We just love capturing those tiny moments that really tell the story of the people on the biggest day of their lives.  Oh, and we have a young daughter, and I (Lisa) always love seeing Chris tear up during the father-daughter dance at the reception.  He usually ends up photographing that part of the day with tears in his eyes and trying to ignore the song!  He’s already dreading our daughter getting married and I seriously think he will have a breakdown during that dance!

What’s your favorite wedding pic/video and why?  (Something that showcases your work)
It’s hard to choose a favorite image.  But this one sticks out just because it was so much fun!  The bride had her heart set on an image with a hay bale so much so that her father-in-law went out and rented it just for the wedding day!  Following the wedding, she climbed the ladder up to the top and was so excited about the images, and they show it!  She even sat on the hay despite the fact she knew it would get all in her dress!  We love all her images and we all had so much fun!

What is your service philosophy?
When a couple hires us for their wedding, we treat the day as if they are a close family member and Chris and I will be the only photographers attending.  Bigger studios may hire associate photographers to book more weddings, but our mission is just the opposite – limit the bookings per year, so each couple has our undivided attention.  It’s amazing how this mission works in our favor because, not only does the quality of our work shine through, but we still enjoy close friendships with many past wedding clients to this day.

What are your strengths compared to others in your category?
We always strive to make people feel comfortable and encourage them to always be themselves and we capture that!  We are able to enhance the images with custom materials and products that you may not find with other photographers.  Our couples always have a great time together with our relaxed laidback approach to our sessions and on the wedding day (yet still sticking to a timeline hehe) as we create wedding art for our couples.  We also go to great lengths to hold ourselves accountable to higher standards by staying active in the national and local chapters of Professional Photographers of America (Lisa has served as former President, Vice President, Past President and is a current Board of Directors member) and by continuing our education.

What attracts brides to your service/company?
The artwork and the relationships we create…  Our service is more than just snapping some photos.  We want to capture the couple – their personalities, their connection, their love story – and the brides want that!  Also, my husband/business partner/photographer/best friend, Chris, and I always try to make our couples (and brides) feel comfortable.  A photographer is the one vendor you spend the most time with and they want photographers that are fun and they can be themselves with…  We always work on developing a relationship with our brides and grooms so they can be comfortable around us and relax on their wedding day!

What would previous couples say was the main reason they selected your company?
We hear a lot that we are personable and that we make them feel comfortable in front of the camera.  Couples have told us that, even though we may have been more expensive or even slightly out of their budget, in addition to loving our art, they felt they “clicked” with us, and that was what made them choose us as their photographers.

Describe the bride/couple that is most attracted to your service/company?
Our ideal client would be someone who values not only having their day documented, but really wants a photographer that will take it to the next level and actually create artwork for them.  Someone who understands that it’s more than just the photography that they are paying for, they are also paying for the art as well as an experience.

What is the most “now” / innovative new product, service, style, or other aspect of your industry that brides and grooms might appreciate?
We are noticing that more of our couples are realizing that, while they may want the digital images (and do purchase them), they most likely will never print any images on their own.  Most of our couples purchase a digital image and print custom box so they can have the best of both worlds.  We are a full service business and encourage our couples to professionally print images, canvases, wedding or session books, etc. through us so they can truly enjoy their images and easily share them with friends and family.
