Nashville Wedding Lovelies: 3 Things I’m Loving by Emily of Simply Yours

Tuesday, September 13, 2011

A good wedding planner loves weddings as much as you do. She is inspired by everything around her and brings that zest for weddings to you. We try to get a pulse on what's going on in the world of weddings, but often, it's the planner who has the best feet on the street.  So, when we want to know the inside scoop - from fabulous finds to distasterous wedding vendors, we go to our planner friends.

Emily from Simply Yours Weddings is one of our go-to gals. So, I reached out to Emily to see what 3 things she's loving, locally or around the globe.  Here's what I found.  Hopefully you'll love something on her list too.

1) Fun Reception Desserts

One thing I'm really loving is having a different kind of dessert at the reception instead of the traditional cake. Now don't get me wrong. I L-O-V-E wedding cake. So I will always have a special place in my heart for cakes and for the wonderful bakers in town who create them. However, I have seen some really fun ideas lately that mix it up a little! Last June, for example Krista Dial had a cheesecake, that she and her mother made, for her and Phillip to cut, but then served milk and cookies to their guests!

Or take, Amanda Mackert's April wedding (which was recently featured here on ABG!). She did a cupcake tower with a small cake for them to cut on top! (The cupcakes were from Gigi's Cupcakes and the small cake from the Bake Shoppe!) Later this month, I'm working with a couple (Blair and Dave) who are going to have an ice cream bar and root beer floats from Maggie Moo's in Hendersonville! How's that for fun and refreshing to beat this crazy heat? AND to keep the tradition alive in their own way, they're going to share a root beer float instead of cutting a cake. All of these things are just a little bit different spin on a yummy tradition that adds a fun element to a reception. (Especially a hot spring or summer one!) Anything that brings out a couples' tastes and personalities in a unique way is ALWAYS a great trend to me!

2) Southern-style Weddings

Another trend I really love... is how everyone wants to be Southern =) Well not every one, but wouldn't you agree there are SO many people all over the country in love with the southern look of a wedding? I'm working with one of my closest friends, Katie, on her upcoming October wedding in Washington DC (which is not a southern city I might add...) and her look is SO very southern with a city twist. Mason jars, neutral colors with green apple pops here and there, rustic mis-matched centerpieces for their sit down dinner tables, all taking place on the hillside of a vineyard. Her bridesmaids are wearing these gorgeous Monique Lullier dresses... but with cowboy boots Mmmm I just love looking at the inspiration images and at the work we've already done! Its such a perfect mix of loveliness and fun, just like a southern girl oughta be! On top of that... check out their save the dates... you can't get much more southern than that!

Then, back to the wedding with the root beer floats and ice cream at their reception, this couple actually hails from Huntington Beach, California! They've lived a little bit of everywhere, but in order to bring their family and friends from all over the country together, they have chosen Nashville for their wedding destination. One of the first emails I ever got from this couple contained their save the date created by Nashville's own Rachel Jasper Designs and my jaw dropped. Couldn't get more southern and darlin' if they tried! And their wedding has absolutely fallen suit! Clearly, I love this trend. I love that southern hospitality is getting passed around this industry like another helping of cornbread.

3) The Ever-So-Popular Photo Booth!

I was sitting here at my desk racking my brain about what else I could say that I loved right now... and then it occurred to me I was staring at not one, not two, but SIX print outs from a photo booth or a party booth from one event or another. Then, I turned to my right, and saw an entire box full of props for Blair and Dave's photo booth. Mustaches on a stick, fake glasses, fake bow ties, and so on and so forth. CLEARLY, I really like the role of photo booths of some kind at an event. I feel like if you're really going to invest in your guests walking away with something tangible, a favor if you will, photo booth print outs are SO fun. They stay on people's refrigerator's or are great bookmarks for SO long, as opposed to the candy that makes it halfway to the car on their way out of your reception.

There are also party booths where you can have the same feel of a photo booth but the images pop up on Facebook or something to that affect later. Even though they don't have the same gratification process, how many friends do you know who have had a party booth image as their profile picture lately? (Maybe that's just my friends... but you get what I'm saying!) There are several companies in town that do a wonderful job with the instant photo booths and there are also some great photographers in town that offer party booths as part of their packages. I highly recommend looking into one of these!

Me and Tabtiha at an ABG party - Photo Booth Nashville style

For now, I give you mine and Tabitha's photo booth pic from the ABG Sex and the City party (thanks to Photo Booth Nashville!) AND my favorite party booth image of my assistant Lauren and I from a wedding Matt Andrews Photography and I did together. Its always good to have your guests laughing at your reception! Especially at themselves.

Thanks for letting me share!

Awwww! smile Thanks for the mention friends! What a fun post! Yeh, our favorite dessert has always been cheesecake, so we thought it made sense to make it an option at our reception! Also, big thanks to Emily for staying on top of the cookie count with the milk and cookie bar. Our guests LOVED that idea so much that we almost missed our chance at snagging a few to enjoy ourselves! smile Emily was the reason I stayed sane on my wedding day. Seriously…hire a planner…or a day-of at the very least! I can’t rave enough about Emily! XO
