Challenging Wedding Venue? Enchanted Florist Transforms A Boring Space
Friday, December 31, 2010
Calling a space ugly is like calling a child's artwork ugly - no one wants to do it but people are thinking it. When I chatted with Caprice of Enchanted Florist about today's wedding, she didn't exactly call this space ugly {my words}, but she did mention that it was blah and lacked a lot of personality:). Luckily, Caprice has a background in stage and theater design and a strong, skilled team behind her. That skill set is exactly what the bride needed to make this wedding venue spectacular.
If you find a wedding venue that needs a little TLC, do not fret! Enchanted Florist turned this space into a Fall wedding wonderland without breaking the budget. With a great design team like the crew at Enchanted, you can too! {Be sure to check out their booth at Weddings, The Bridal Show. It is always uber-inspiring.}
Event space before transformation
Caprice: This is one of the cases where we had free reign with the event decor and florals. Her reception space was sparce with a dropped ceiling that just wasn’t the best but it was ideal because it could accommodate her high guest count. Half the space had a drop celing and half the ceiling was removed and painted black so the question was, “How do we camouflage this horrible drop celing?” So we ended up doing a lot of honeysuckle vines and tulle with ambers and golds and concentrated that.
The centerpieces were mainly candles and we shut the lights off. The room was filled with just candles and twinkly lights and it made the ceiling disappear - it was really beautiful when you went into it. Once it was night time, it was dark outside, really pretty and the bride was happy. It was a lot of work but it proves that you can take a space that really didn’t have much to begin with compared to a more elaborate space that’s already decorated. It was a Fall wedding so we used a lot of brown and cream tulle. That gave it an almost tented feel.
Napkins/placesettings: Original chairs weren’t ideal so chairs were rented. The bride was really trying to be D.I.Y. so we bought pieces of cork board and put ribbon on them with a leaf on top to use as chargers. Some of the centerpieces were cut logs or even just found candles the bride had and we would take one element, which was the fall leaves, and tried to use it on every table to pull every table together no matter what was on it. We gave her pops of colors with the napkins and added color without it being too expensive.
I personally like to try to incorporate the groom and a lot of times they may not be too concerned but there are lots of grooms who do want to participate. Any time I have a groom that is interested I always try to bring an element to the wedding that they will like. In this wedding, the groom was outdoorsy and manly and loved the idea of using the cut logs and leaves to complement the florals.
Most important thing a bride can do for herself before she goes to see a florist is to get online, get into blogs and magazines and put together pictures of things they like. She doesn’t have to be exact but it helps us when she puts together ideas and looks. Do a little homework - it’s the best thing you can do for yourselves, then come in knowing what you want and try to be flexible. Keeping an open mind will get you really far.
Thank you to Zach & Jody Gray of Gray Photography (Grayphotograph.com) for the pictures and thank you to Caprice of Enchanted Florist for taking the time to let us in on how she works her magic! You can see more of Caprice's work and the beautiful weddings she's done on the Enchanted Florist Blog.
