Lucy and Corey Hire Joon Powell to Photograph their Ghanian-American Wedding in Chicago

Friday, November 23, 2012

Lucy and Corey were married in May of this year in Tinley Park, Illinois, which is outside of Chicago. Joon Powell, a Nashville photographer, featured their wedding on her blog and I was curious about their wedding, with its African ties, especially since Joon lives here and the couple doesn't. I reached out to Joon to learn a bit more about how a Nashville photographer ended up in a Chicago suburb photographing a multicultural wedding. Here's what Joon had to say...

How did they find you considering you reside in Nashville?

Joon Powell Photography: Lucy is a friend/co-worker of one of my sisters, who lives in Columbia, SC. One night I was visiting that sister and got to meet some of her friends. It turned out Lucy had just gotten engaged. We got to talk about her wedding plans and it turned out that I was a great fit!

Do you know why you stood out over their local photographers?

Joon Powell Photography: Lucy enjoyed my photographs from previous weddings as well as my friendly organic approach to documenting their day.

Corey is American; Lucy grew up in America, too, but her family is of Ghanian descent. In what ways did they incorporate US wedding traditions?

Joon Powell Photography: Lucy wore a stunning white dress and Corey wore a tuxedo. The bridesmaids wore matching gorgeous yellow dresses. The ceremony took place inside the Mayo African Methodist Episcopal Church and the reception was at the nearby Odyssey Country Club. Couples dancing and singing with their fraternity or sorority also happens at lots of American weddings.

In what ways did they express the bride's Ghanian culture?

Joon Powell Photography: Lucy changed into a Ghanian dress part-way through the reception. There was an African dance performance by some of the young female guests, many of whom wore hand-made brightly colored dresses and hats. Later in the evening a costumed man in stilts danced with the children.

What did you especially love about this wedding?

Joon Powell Photography: Besides the fabulous clothing, I especially loved the enthusiasm for dancing at this wedding!
