Her Day Of Fairy Tales - Planner Hillary Capes Gets Married!

Friday, March 25, 2011

One of the best ways to get a first-hand look into a wedding is when an industry professional gets married! Today's real wedding feature is on Hillary Capes' wedding to her husband James Smith. Hillary runs Your Day Of Fairy Tales event planning, and after helping brides achieve the day of their dreams while watching their budget, she gots to have her own big day, with the help of a wedding planner of course!

I love hillary's color palette; the slate gray bridesmaid dresses make the vibrant bouquets pop!  The teal + pink contrast is delicious!

Bride & Groom ~ Hillary Capes and James Smith
Day/Date ~ October 16, 2010
Venue ~ Maple Grove Missionary Baptist, Dickson, TN
Guests ~ 150
Budget ~ under $10,000

Did you end up over or under budget?
Our budget was broken into what my parents were contributing and what James and I knew we could contribute. If we wanted it, we got it, within reason. For example: ceremony musicians were the VERY last thing we were working on. We didn't have the money for what we were being quoted, so we settled for an iPod.

The Wedding

How would you describe your style as a couple?
As a couple, we are very laid back. We also both are very “rural”. We don’t wear designer clothes or drive fancy cars. We are happy just having what we have been blessed with and wanted our wedding to reflect that.

How did you incorporate that style into your wedding
As I stated previously, we are very simple people, but I, Hillary, love being a total girl and having the princess wedding was a must. So I went for a simple, country chic, elegant feel when planning. We used a lot of  mason jars, moss and gerbera daisies to keep everything simple and chic at the same time. The old country barn, little white church in the country, cows in the pasture and creek running behind the tent were the perfect accent to giving our wedding that “country feel”.

What was the favorite aspect of your wedding?
My favorite aspect of the wedding was having everything on the same location. We played with the idea of having the reception in town at a local establishment, but having both festivities at the same location was best! We also had our family’s Pomeranian, Murphy, as a part of the wedding!

Where did you splurge? Where did you save/DIY?
We definitely splurged in the areas of photography and videography. I am a true believer that after all is said and done, those are the only two things you have left over. So when we hired Heather and Eugene of 2duce2, and Mark and Noelle of McCoy Made, we knew it was the best decision we could have made.

Now that the wedding day is over, is there anything about your planning process you feel you could have done differently?
I would have definitely hired ceremony musicians and delegated someone to man the booth for the songs we wanted played.

In one sentence, what words of advice do you have for couples in the midst of their planning? Relax. At the end of your wedding day, the only thing that matters, is that you and your fiance/husband, are married. All the rest is unimportant as long as you are surrounded by family and friends!

As a wedding planner, what was it like planning your own wedding?
Planning my own wedding was the most fun thing I have ever experienced! I am now able to connect with my clients and empathaize with them on their struggles. I experienced the ups and downs, and the stresses that accompany wedding planning.

Did you have a planner?
Of course! I searched for about 6 months before finally convincing Carly Rager, whom I have known for a while and owns her own planning company, to coordinate my wedding! I was very happy with my selection. Carly and Blair put the final touches on my wedding and allowed me to relax.
