Who needs drapery when you’ve got Old Hickory Lake as the backdrop for your wedding? Meet Hanna and Drew: A couple committed to each other and committed to having a wedding that reflected their Southern, elegant-yet-simple style. The couple’s focus: make sure the guests and wedding party (and the couple, of course!) had a great time.

Wedding Details

How would you describe your style as a couple?

Simple, traditional and fun-loving

How did you incorporate that style into your wedding?

We love going out on our boat during the summer so we both wanted to find a venue on the water. When planning our wedding my goal for the style of the wedding was simple elegance. Of course I wanted everything to be beautiful but I did not want it to be too “over the top”, I wanted the day to stay fun for our bridal party and guest and for our commitment to each other stay the focus of the evening. We used bright, spring colors and our venue, which was a beautiful old home originally built in the 1830’s, to reach our goal of a traditional, southern, simply elegant wedding.

What was your (or your guests’) favorite aspect of your wedding?

Our favorite part of the wedding was the ceremony. The lake was a perfect backdrop. The guest have mentioned loving the lake view and the layout of the reception (including the clear top tent…everyone loved it!)

Where did you splurge?  Where did you save/DIY?

We splurged on the church pews for the ceremony and the clear top tent for the reception. We saved/DIY with doing our own lighting and Drew built the stage and backdrop for the ceremony.

Now that the wedding day is over, is there anything about your planning process you feel you could have done differently?

I would have worried less. I worried about the weather, our venue (which was under major renovations during our planning process) and other things that were completely out of my control. The weather ended up being perfect and the venue was completed in time and was more beautiful than I imagined.

In one sentence, what words of advice do you have for couples in the midst of their planning?

Enjoy the process! The planning process can be stressful but enjoy the time you have with your family and friends during the engagement stage and also communicate with your fiancé, make sure this is a day that focuses on the two of you.

For many women, their fascination with weddings fades after they say, “I do.” Not for me. Even though my wedding was two years ago, I still very much have a heart for weddings and helping brides focus on what’s important — building a day that reflects both the bride and the groom while focusing on the why of the wedding — the marriage. In addition to my job as a personal trainer and wellness coach, I also coordinate weddings part time, offering couples both perspective and a little elbow grease to make sure their wedding day is a success. I’m a huge advocate for life balance and I like to remind and encourage couples to keep their sanity — and a healthy relationship — in the midst of wedding planning.
