Guest Nashville Wedding Expert: Hire a Seasoned DJ or DIY Your Reception Music?

Thursday, January 28, 2016

Guest wedding expert: Nashville Party Authority has served Nashville weddings and events since 1987.  Owner Blair, today's guest wedding expert, has advice that will be very helpful as you plan your Nashville wedding.  To learn more about this seasoned wedding DJ, visit the Nashville Party Authority website.

First of all, allow me to express a moment of exaltation - IT’S ALMOST SPRING!  And gratification - Thank you, God.

Now that that’s out of the way, let’s get to the issue at hand: When considering whether to hire a professional DJ for your spring wedding, or to do it yourself, it’s important to keep in mind that one size does not fit all. Every wedding and reception is as unique as are the bride and groom involved.

While some couples will undoubtedly have success choosing their own music, securing the audio equipment, and expediting the soundtrack of their most important day, others will feel more confident having an expert in the field at the helm.  For those who are leaning toward the do-it-yourself approach, I respectfully ask you to consider the following:

What kind of atmosphere do you want to present at your reception?

By the time of the reception, the bride and groom have had their fair share of planning sessions, phone conferences, emails, invitations and ...whew!  The list goes on and on!  The last things they want to do are to manage a reception timeline and pore over hundreds of tunes.  Instead, they want to relax, interact with guests, and, most of all, HAVE FUN!  A true professional DJ will customize a wedding itinerary to your liking, facilitate the formalities (formal announcement of the couple, cake cutting, bouquet & garter toss, formal dances) field requests, and interact with guests and transition the atmosphere from formal to party with professional courtesy, expertise, and flare.  Sure it’s a juggling act, but to the consummate pro with well over fifty gigs under his belt, it’s a conscientious but happy walk in the park.

Is it important to you that your guests dance?

The do-it-yourself approach favors a more informal atmosphere featuring background music where dancing and entertainment are not top priorities.  While most people have their own personal and unique taste in music, only an experienced professional commands a vast knowledge of the many different genres and the know-how to incorporate them in such a way as to appeal to all the age groups attending (everyone from your friends, to your 75-year-old grandfather, to your teenage brother and sister) and, most importantly, use that expertise to motivate your guest to the dance floor and keep them there for the duration of the event.

Keep in mind that a seasoned, professionally trained wedding DJ embraces all aspects of his/her skill set such as visual presentation, state of the art sound, mastery of audio gear and mix techniques, and supreme people skills. You should also expect him to be a confident, proficient public speaker.

Certainly your wedding day is your day, and the correct way of doing things is the way you want them done.  Remember, all disc jockeys are not equal.  Motivating people to dance, filling a dance floor, and sustaining it is an art that takes years of professional experience to master.

In any event, whether you hire a professional DJ, get a friend to do it, or do it yourself, you deserve the spring wedding and reception that you have envisioned.  We at the Nashville Party Authority wish you much happiness and success.  Congratulations!

From Beyoncé to Bach, Harpist Kirsten Agresta Copely Provides Live Music at Nashville Weddings

Tuesday, May 5, 2015

When asked what new wedding find our readers might love, Toni, of Celebrations by Design, raved about Kirsten Agresta Copely, a talented musician in Nashville that provides a unique take on both traditional and modern wedding music.

Kirsten is an acclaimed harpist that has played on shows like "the Today Show" and "Late Night with David Letterman."  She’s also played with numerous musical artists, including Mrs. Carter (aka Beyoncé), and for royalty.  (Check out her gallery here.)  When she's not traveling with legends, she offers her musical talent at weddings in Nashville and around the country.  She can play anything from classical to your favorite modern love song.

Live music at a wedding can add so much dynamic and interest to the event.  It provides something that recorded music just cannot.  Read more below about Kirsten and what she has to offer.  Be sure to check out her website for some samples of her beautiful music.

What can having a live musician at a reception or ceremony add to a wedding?
Live music provides the ambience for a wedding event and reflects the personality of the bride/groom.  Whether the music is traditional or modern, the versatility of the harp offers endless possibilities.

Are you able to play “our song” or other songs we request?
I have a vast repertoire of songs from classical to popular, and am also open to transcribing a song for the harp if it’s possible to do so.

Are we able to meet and plan before the big day?  If so, what should I be prepared to have with me (questions, examples of music, etc.)?
I offer a complimentary consultation with you and your betrothed to choose your ceremony music at my studio.  You can bring ideas for music with you, or allow me to play some examples of different choices for you.

Do you have a video we could share with our readers?
I do not have a video available for posting, but any interested clients are welcome to visit my website for more information, sound samples, and media.

Part 1: Houston Station Debuts Nashville’s One-Stop Shopping Location for Weddings & Events

Tuesday, April 14, 2015

As a wedding planning bride, the best event of the spring wedding season so far has to have been Houston Station's Open House, which took place on April 9, 2015 in Nashville! It was such a fun night where I was able to meet the wedding vendors that are housed in the historic venue community and event space. From great music and exquisite lighting to diverse caterers and food trucks, I could only imagine getting married with these all-star vendors.

The Grand Opening truly allowed guests to see the space and the vendor community in action! Here are a few of the amazing vendors I visited.

Houston Station - houstonstationnashville.com
The venue was set up to showcase ideas for a ceremony and a reception, complete with a DJ and food everywhere!

Flavor (catering & special occasions) - flavorcaters.com
There was so much unexpected flavor in their Mexican chocolate dessert. It was clearly a favorite dessert as many people kept telling us we had to try it.  And the turnip green queso - amazing!

LVD @ Houston Station lvdbridal.com
A consignment wedding dress boutique housed in Houston Station and brought to you by The Dress Theory, this gorgeous space was filled with jeweled and laced gowns. As a shopping bride, I know I will be back to try on some of their one-of-a-kind dresses!

JD's Music Mobile DJ  / Southern Sky Lighting @ Houston Station southernskytn.com
Housed in Houston Station with wonderful wedding options to entertain your guests. I enjoyed chatting with the staff that just moved in and was ready to help planning brides with music and sound.

This all-in-one space has just about every vendor you need for your Nashville wedding.  Click here to see part 2 and enjoy more vendors at the Houston Station Grand Opening.

6) Menu

- Family style is one of my current favorite menu for events. Less formal than plated but warmer than buffets, family style brings your tables together, truly sharing their meal.
- While it's good to keep general tastes in mind, don't shy away from a little exploration via pairings. Tapas and tastings is a great way to broaden guests horizons while still providing a great menu.  Some ideas:

Mini Sliders with Short Beer
Bite Size Taco with mini Margerita
Sushi with a Sip of Sake

7) Music

More and more clients are choosing to merge their band and dj into one amazing sensory experience for guests. Starting with a traditional band for cocktails and dinner can create high energy and fun interaction for guests. However, after the cake, why not dim the lights and throw on some fantastic House music or spin Top 40 with a high energy dj who knows exactly how to get guests on the dance floor?

Whatever you choose to do, just be you.
