Real Tennessee Wedding: Planner is Right on Target; Helps Bride Plan Rustic Wedding at Messick Farm

Friday, November 15, 2013

Meagan had a few requests for her fall wedding: She wanted it simple, she wanted it rustic with a hint of vintage, and she wanted a day that her guests could remember fondly as relaxed, comfortable and filled with the love the couple has for one another.

The bride and her groom enlisted the help of wedding planner Emily, of Simply Yours Wedding and Events, to take Meagan’s vision of her October wedding from concept to creation. The theme was carried throughout the ceremony and reception with the intimate touches of burlap, old lanterns and subtle pops of color. The wedding was held at Messick Farm in Lascassas, about 38 miles from Nashville and just a few minutes down the road from Meagan’s childhood home.

Below are several special images from this memorable day and words from both Meagan and her planner, Emily of Simply Yours Weddings, about this lovely wedding.

Q&A with bride, Meagan

How did you find the Messick Farm? Where is it located? Do you live in that area?

I found out about Messick Farm from friends who had been married there previously. It is located in Lascassas Tenn., which is about 10 minutes down the road from the house I grew up in.

Why was it the ideal location for your wedding?

I always knew I wanted an outdoor wedding that included some sort of barn to create a rustic feel. Messick Farm was perfect because it felt secluded from the rest of the world.

You had the cutest kids in your wedding. Can they be rented? :)

Hahaha! I'm sure you can pay them in candy!

What was your vision for your wedding?

My vision was to create a rustic, yet vintage atmosphere. I used flowers, old lanterns, burlap and lace for centerpieces which balanced with my barn wood venue.

What experience did you most want for your guests?

I wanted my guests to feel comfortable and relaxed throughout the wedding and reception. I wanted them to see and feel the love that my husband shared through our taste in all the details.

Did you design your wedding or did you work with Emily to do so?

I had somewhat of an idea I was trying to achieve for my wedding but Emily definitely pulled everything together. Emily came up with better ways to execute the flow and atmosphere of the wedding than I could have ever dreamed of. To be honest, Emily did do most of the planning and was right on target of what I wanted my dream wedding to look like.

The s'mores bar looks fantastic! Who was your caterer, and what was your wedding food menu?

Believe me, the s'mores bar was as good as it looked! It was definitely a hit with our guests. Although I cannot take credit for the idea of the s'mores bar, our amazing caterer, Two Fat Men Catering Company, dreamed up this masterpiece during our first meeting. Two Fat Men created our menu to fit our needs and our guests' appetites! We started off with strawberry bruschetta and mac & cheese bites with honey chipotle meatballs for cocktail hour. The dinner buffet included grilled chicken with teriyaki ginger, beef on a stick with chili plum sauce, a fall apple salad with sweet tea vinaigerette dressing, and a grilled fall vegetable medley. And of course the s'mores bar for dessert!

We always recommend that brides hire a wedding planner. Why did you hire one?

I hired a wedding planner because I knew I did not want to be stressed out during this process. I was not only working but in school full time and just knew I couldn't plan everything I needed to. I especially wanted the day of the wedding to be stress and anxiety free, not only for me, but for my family and bridal party. I knew it would not have run as smoothly without a wedding planner.

How did you find Emily of Simply Yours? What was it like working with her?

A few of my friends had used her as their wedding planner and highly recommended I do the same. I have known Emily for almost 10 years now, so it was easy for me to put my trust in her planning the most important day of my life. Working with Emily made my wedding process so easy, fun and actually enjoyable. She was always a phone call away whenever I would start to worry about something or have any questions. She made me feel like I was her only bride and always put me first. I can truly say I could not have done it without her.

What was most important for your big day? (Dress, food, entertainment, design, etc?)

For me, the most important part of the day was creating an atmosphere that my family, friends and guests felt comfortable in. I knew that if my guests were happy, I was happy.

Now that your day is over, what advice would you give other Tennessee brides?

Check the forecast!! But seriously, get a wedding planner!!

Q&A with wedding planner, Emily of Simply Yours Weddings

What was your role in their wedding planning - day of planning, design, both? How did you help Meagan bring her vision to life?

All of the above! I do not do flowers all the time because our industry is blessed with absolutely incredible florists. However, Meagan really wanted something simple because that is her personality, but also what was better for her budget. So we worked together to come up with a design that was very Southern and celebrated the colors of fall in the midst of the rustic look that people just can't get enough of right now! The colorful overlays set the tone for the tables. There was so much color already in the linens, we accented with organic colors in the flowers, wood pieces and lanterns. Then, the vibrant bridesmaids' dresses were complimented with neutral and romantic flowers, while Meagan's got the pops of fall colors. Everything was very simple, but had lots of color and life, a lot like Meagan. ;)

What was your favorite aspect of working with the couple?

I have known Meagan since she was in high school through a ministry I am a part of called Young Life. So while we had a lot of fun bringing her vision to life, I honestly feel like the greatest gift of that experience was seeing who Meagan has become and walking with her through such a significant part of her life. Engagement is challenging and so many people don't realize it will be or they get frustrated when it is and they don't want it to be. Getting married is a major life change. Meagan was in school, working a job, planning a wedding, buying a house and trying to learn how to move from girlfriend to fiance to wife all at the same time. It was such a privilege to be a part of that journey.

What was your favorite part of their wedding day?

I'm having a hard time picking an answer! The weather the day before had been SO cold and it warmed up on her wedding day and gave us the most incredible blue skies and amazing sunset. Seeing how happy she and her family were with all the details that had come together ALWAYS makes my heart so very full. Watching her dance with her Dad and the both of them absolutely lose it. The s'mores bar from Two Fat Men, YUM. Watching her and Alex dance and laugh with their friends but steal moments with each other...such a precious day for two wonderful people.

For many women, their fascination with weddings fades after they say, “I do.” Not for me. Even though my wedding was two years ago, I still very much have a heart for weddings and helping brides focus on what’s important — building a day that reflects both the bride and the groom while focusing on the why of the wedding — the marriage. In addition to my job as a personal trainer and wellness coach, I also coordinate weddings part time, offering couples both perspective and a little elbow grease to make sure their wedding day is a success. I’m a huge advocate for life balance and I like to remind and encourage couples to keep their sanity — and a healthy relationship — in the midst of wedding planning.
