Kelly & Barrett Go All Out with Wonderful Details, Delicious Food at Laid Back, Messick Farm Wedding

Friday, September 5, 2014

Relaxed wedding atmospheres are becoming more and more common these days. They provide a day for the bride and groom’s family and friends to enjoy their time together, spend time outdoors, and they give the couple a chance to show off their favorite things.

Rustic, vintage and garden weddings are gaining popularity in the Tennessee countryside. There are plenty of options when it comes to charming rustic venues around Nashville. Kelly and Barrett held their September 2013 wedding at Messick Farms, located 45 miles southeast of Music City.

With outdoor lawn games, lots of sweets and ice cream, and great live music, this couple wanted their guests to enjoy a laid back day that felt true to their spirit. Providing incredible food options for their guests was a priority, with extras like a potato bar, a shrimp & grits bar AND an ice cream bar. They brought in local favorite Chef’s Market to make sure their menu was something their guests would truly enjoy and remember.

Making sure that the guests were up dancing all night, the Randy McLellan band brought energy to this music centered crowd.

This is one wedding that we all wish we could have attended.  The food, the details, the dancing...get ready to love Kelly's big day!

Wedding Details

How would you describe your style as a couple?

When we started to plan our wedding it was very important to us that the wedding reflect who we were and what we enjoyed.  We are definitely a laid back, no fuss couple.  So when we envisioned our wedding we wanted a short list of things:  to be outside and for people to be able to really enjoy themselves and not feel “stuffy”.

How did you incorporate that style into your wedding?

To get ourselves started on our vision, we knew the venue was going to play a huge part.  When we saw Messick Farms and spoke with Laura, we knew immediately that it was our venue.  It was outside and had a charming feel to it.  From there, we incorporated our style by picking and choosing things that reflected who we were.  The food and music were very important in showcasing what we enjoyed and what we wanted our guests to enjoy about our wedding.  We also tried to incorporate fun things like outdoor lawn games and an ice cream bar to help people relax and enjoy their time with us.

What was your (or your guests’) favorite aspect of your wedding?

By far the thing that people talked about the most at and after the wedding was the food.  When we planned the menu with Carol at Chef’s Market, we wanted to have a variety of options and things that we both loved.  We had curry chicken salad and pimento cheese in rice cones as the hand passed appetizers to start.  Afterward, guests could pick up an amazing salad served in a glass which gave them the option to eat sitting down or while walking around and mingling.  For dinner, we had a pot roast station, a potatoes bar with traditional potatoes and sweet potatoes, plus all the toppings.  We also had a shrimp and grits bar with all sorts of toppings for it too.  To finish it off, for dessert we had mini pies, cake and a Maggie Moo’s ice cream bar.  Even now, when we run into guests we haven’t seen since the wedding, the first thing they tell us is how they dream of that food!

For me personally, my favorite part of the wedding was having Scott and Kristin as our photographers.  I honestly can’t say enough GREAT things about them.  We got to spend some good times with them before the wedding day and it made a huge difference.  They felt more like friends than photographers.  They really kept us relaxed and laughing all day long.  And not to mention the pictures turned out amazing!

Where did you splurge?  Where did you save/DIY?

Since we knew food and music where the two most important things to us, we were willing to spend more to have all the food options we wanted.  And Barrett’s family is very musical so we opted to spend extra to have a live band.

We saved some by DIY’ing things like the ribbon back drop, the signage, the programs and the lawn games.  My best friend and maid of honor was a big help too.  She and I spent lots of time together finding and making all of our little DIY projects.

Now that the wedding day is over, is there anything about your planning process you feel you could have done differently?

I would have worried less!  Because we did an outdoor wedding and reception, we all stressed about the rain for at least a month before the wedding. It rained the Friday before the wedding but on our wedding day the sky was beautiful.  I was a mess about the wedding until I woke up on our wedding day and looked outside.

In one sentence, what words of advice do you have for couples in the midst of their planning?

One sentence…hmm that’s tough!  I would say pick the things that matter the most to you and focus on those because if you try to make everything ‘perfect’ you won’t enjoy the planning process as much.
